The Guitar: An Instrument With A Rich History and Enduring Popularity.

As someone who has been playing a variety of stringed instruments for over 30 years, I would like to share a bit of the rich history and enduring popularity of the guitar.
It is believed that the guitar is based on an instrument used by the Ancient Greeks and Romans as early as 3000 BC. This instrument was evolved as an accompaniment to their vocal music. It was also believed that these early instruments had a direct influence on the development of the modern guitar. Known to historians as the ‘four-stringed lute’, this instrument had a fretted neck with four strings, made from actual catgut.
The four-stringed lute gradually evolved into the five-stringed lute, known as the vihuela in Spain and Portugal. In time, the number of frets on the vihuela was increased from four to five, giving rise to the modern six-string guitar. By the 18th century, the design of the guitar had evolved to its current form, with a hollow body, metal frets, and metal strings.
With the rise of the electric guitar in the 1930’s and 1940’s, the modern age of guitar was born. This electric version of the traditional acoustic guitar allowed for amplification and was popularized by stars such as Chuck Berry and Les Paul. In the decades that followed, electric guitar sounds would become inextricably linked with the development of rock and roll, revolutionizing the way we view and interact with music.
